Recovery Facility (MRF)
420 Torne
Valley Road
Hillburn, NY |
Known as a MRF (pronounced "murf"), this
facility processes the commingled containers and
commingled paper items listed below. They are then
sorted, consolidated (baled) and shipped to manufacturing
plants where they are made into new products.
The Materials Recovery Facility is capable of processing
250 tons of commingled papers and commingled containers
per eight hour shift with a maximum of 750 tons
per day. Commingled papers and commingled containers
(cans, bottles, etc.) from all of the Towns and
Villages in the County are delivered to the MRF
by private haulers and recyclers.
The commingled papers are seperated by hand pickers
by various grades, (e.g. newsprint, old corrugated,
etc.) baled and shipped to plants that will recycle
the paper into new products.
Likewise, the cans and bottles are separated by
the use of magnets, air blowers, and hand pickers
into various components such as aluminum, ferrous
materials, and various grades of plastic. These
separated recyclables are then baled and shipped
to companies that will recycle them. The companies
generally pay the Authority to recycle these materials.
The MRF is housed in a 36,000 square foot building
which includes a 10,000 square foot tipping floor.
The process area includes 5,000 square feet for
bale storage. The MRF was constructed at a cost
of $5.8 million.
The MRF has been in commercial operation since
1998. Click here

at the MRF and recycled into new products.
Note: Some municipal recycling programs may not
include all of the items listed below. Call
your town or village for more information on
its recycling program.
